1850 Census Year in Holt, Missouri...a listing of Everett Van Vickle, 60, M, farmer; Sarah Van Vickle, 59, F; John VanVickle, 15, M, farmer; next door is Jackson Van Vickle, 27, M, Farmer; Eliza Van Vickle, 24, F; and Harriett Van Vickle, 6, F. These ages would give birth years of Evert (abt. 1790), Sarah (abt. 1789), Jackson (abt. 1823), John (abt 1835), Eliza (abt. 1826), and Hariet (abt. 1844).

From Early Ohio Settlers: Purchasers of Land in Southwestern Ohio, 1800-1840. Van Vickel, Robert (A)* August 17, 1812, residence Butler range 01, township 03, section 10. Alexander Grant was R1, T3, section 4, 1813. These sections touch corners, they were neighbors. Grant is my (Naomi Emmich) ancestor, his youngest aunt married Robert VanVickle. The land patent for Grant is in his name alone, dated 1813, yet in February 1819, he and Evert (Robert's brother) Van Vickle sell the land to Jonathan Winn. The only reason to present this is that it shows Evert Van Vickle and wife Sarah (White) Van Vickle were physically present before the justices of Butler Co, Ohio in February 1819 to sign this deed. Mel's synopsis and biography of Enoch Van Vickle would indicate they had already removed to Jennings Co, IN. I would suggest they may have moved around often, more than one direct move. If these folks could get to Iowa to have William there in 1816, they may have had cousins just across the river in what became Missouri. The army needed a ferry among other things. --from Naomi Emmich in Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2001

Ohio Records and Pioneer Families, Vol. 1-25 (Vol II, page 141) Everett Vansickle of PA married Sarah White of PA and settled in Butler County, Ohio; later in 1828 to Illinois. They had a son Enoch b. 1814 in Butler County, Ohio who married first Nancy White and had nine children. He married 2nd Mrs. Cynthia Souder Cline who was born 1823 in Pike Co., Ohio, the widow of Nathaniel Cline. They live in Illinois. --from Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2000.

Unconfirmed anecdotal information about Floyd and Finis Vanvickle as told by Sue Petty on Brian Christensen's VanVickle website (sent by Cathy Phillips via 13Nov05 email)

"....Floyd was 5 years old.  He and his brother Finus( who was younger than he)  was a full blooded Indian and was being moved to a reservation. ( from where I don't know) On the trip the boy's mother died.  There was a black man walking with them and because they were now orphaned (where was dad...RIGHT)  he stole them away to a farm that he use to work at to a family named VanVickle!!! The man who took them told Benjamin Vanvickle that they were Smiths Indians because the man moving them was a calvary officer named "Smith". Floyd heard this and believed his last name was Smith.  He said he believed it for years.  He also believed his Mother Mary Vaden was buried in North Carolina on an Indian Reservation. Floyd took the Vanvickle name and when he was about twelve they moved to another state (believed Arkansas).  Floyd wasn't with the family long after that because he killed a man with a knife (Floyd said it was because he was cheating him at poker).  Old Ben is what he called Benjamin Vanvickle because the man told him too.  He called his mother Mother but he does remember her name was Mary Vaden. Floyd always said he was born in Mumford Tennessee.  He remembered (the black man) telling his dad."

Cathy Phillips via 13Nov05 email also recalls receiving some sketchy anecdotal information from Floyd's daughter Brenda. Mary C. Vaden Acorn was the mother of Mary Ann (Annie) Acorn and Floud Acorn. [apparently Floyd's name was misspelled. However there is another reference to a Floyd Adair (not Acorn). This information suggests that Mary Vaden may not have continued to go by the VanVickle surname and that may have been true of some of her children as well. Perhaps this little bit of information might provide a helpful lead to someone interested in searching for more information on this family.
